Pre Implantation Genetic Testing Philosophy Essay

Pre Implantation Genetic Testing Philosophy Essay Humankind rotates around multiplication. We have to repeat so as to create people in the future. In the previous scarcely any years, science and medication has increased a monstrous measure of information about pregnancy and the basic formative phases of how it functions. Besides, science is continuously improving, bringing about our capacity to analyze, control and once in a while treat hereditary variations from the norm. Techniques, for example, the pre-implantation hereditary conclusion (PGD) were created as a way to keep away from particular premature births by recognizing that the undeveloped organism is liberated from horrendous deadly hereditary infections, for example, Huntingtons illness. In any case, as of late PGD has been bringing up some moral issues as individuals started utilizing this innovation for restoratively inconsequential and unjustified reasons. Vanity and optional intentions of patients who use PGD for the production of creator infants and guardian angel kin abuses the key standard of ethical quality. Utilizing PGD for reasons other than legitimized hereditary testing is impermissible on the grounds that it regards the potential infant as a methods not as closures in itself; in this way, it disregards Kants second clear cut goal. Logical Background PGD works through a procedure of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). In this method, numerous eggs are delivered, recovered from the ovaries and [manually] treated with the spouses sperm in a research center, outside of the female body3. As the undeveloped organisms create in vitro, incipient organism biopsy is performed by expelling a solitary cell from every multi day old embryo4. These cells are dissected by an assortment of techniques for specific chromosomal or hereditary variations from the norm so as to recognize which incipient organisms are liberated from hereditary illness. Ordinary, solid undeveloped organisms are then moved into the uterus where they can develop and form into a sound youngster. Contentions Kant Immanuel Kant thought of an ethical way of thinking that depended on a hypothesis of the Categorical Imperative. These are substantial standards dependent on the idea of obligation that must be obeyed by all and are acceptable all by themselves. The second downright basic expresses that one should Act so that you treat humankind, regardless of whether in your own individual or in the individual of some other, consistently simultaneously as an end and never simply as a way to an end2. As it were, one has ideal obligation to not utilize somebody as a way to accomplish an individual objective. This rule of soundness defines the center of good law and prerequisites that reasonable operators must follow. Moreover, every sane being has self-governance, or an unrestrained choice to characterize their own law. Notwithstanding, ownership of self-governance by each being infers that all people ought to be dealt with similarly, with a similar measure of regard and one can't encroach on the othe rs objective will. The instinctive quintessence of humankind, in this manner, items to utilizing others as a unimportant instrument since it disregards ones respectability and humanness. Along these lines, one can't declare an ethical option to claim an individual like a bit of property-since restrictive directly over an individual precludes any presence from securing a free sound activity; moreover, it denies the individual an option to be an end in themselves. Be that as it may, people have worth and worth; thus, they require to be regarded. Every individual has the right to be regarded for his/her fundamental being (of what their identity is). While PGD is performed on embryos, its utilization is as yet unjustified in light of the fact that babies are potential people and in this manner, require a similar measure of regard as some other individual. Moreover, the utilization of PGD in making planner infants and friend in need kin abuses Kants second straight out goal. Planner Babies A convincing contention against PGD emerges out of its sketchy potential use in making impeccable creator babies. The innovation behind PGD would permit guardians to choose explicit and insignificant characteristics, (for example, eye shading, stature, athletic capacity, even knowledge) that they need their kid to communicate. Such innovation is suggestive of the Build-a-Bear Workshop however for adults. Utilizing PGD as a methods for genetic counseling is misleading and unjustified from multiple points of view, for example, its infringement of the second straight out goal. Guardians have mishandled PGD use so as to have it take into account their individual prideful desires for making an ideal kid. They vainly pick and picked the characteristics they find gainful and dispose of ones they find unfortunate or unperfect so they could fulfill their objective of not having a monetarily and socially oppressive youngster. In addition to the fact that this is off-base since it victimizes the crippled on the grounds that it abuses the basic belief of mankind by encroaching upon the childs self-ruling will by treating him/her as a way to an unseemly end. The guardians social and monetary closures are being sought after while the childs closes are being ignored. In structuring a kid, guardians destruct the childs will (in a couple of various ways) in this manner, they neglect to regard them as an end in themselves. Truly, guardians demolish certain highlights their youngster would normally have (also the decimation of undesirable hatchlings). Thusly, guardians ne glect to treat the youngster compassionately. Likewise, adjusting mental capacities of a kid is tricky and confounds their will. Thus, it disregards the sane capacity of a-potential-discerning operator and his/her end in himself/herself. At long last, guardians confine their childs will by changing their entire mental and physical being and not permitting them to seek after their individual objectives as they see fit4. All together for the psychological and physical mankind to be treated as an end, ones will must exist. Nonetheless, when guardians select qualities for their kid, they ignore their childs noble and accommodating option to be the manner by which they were normally intended to be. They utilize their youngster as a way to arrive at some vain, social or practical end, subsequently, damaging Kants second unmitigated objective. Each individual is a sound operator (even the embryo which is a potential individual) and has self-sufficiency; accordingly, one ought not be treate d as a necessary chore. Since the utilization of PGD permits guardians to utilize their youngsters as a way to an unjustified end, its utilization is impermissible. Deliverer Siblings Another issue with utilizing PGD emerges from its unjustified formation of guardian angel kin. A deliverer kin is a youngster made by tissue composing and help of PGD in anticipation of giving an ideal HLA-match to the genuinely wiped out kin so as to spare his/her life. While the built kid doesn't profit or is hurt, the ramifications of such method are ethically dishonest. It generalizes the youngster, seeing him/her as a minor product, dismissing the childs altruistic right to fairness. Regarding such kid as an apparatus to fix another disregards a moral guideline of regarding an individual as an end in himself/herself (abuses the subsequent CI) since it utilizes the kid as a methods for which to treat the undesirable more established kin. Such uses of PGD take after subjection, where the guardian angel kid is a slave and the parent is a slave-proprietor. The parent would have an option to possess the slave youngster insisting the kid as a ware. Be that as it may, a youngster isn't an item to have ownership over; the kid is an individual who requires regard and has a self-governing will to be an end in himself/herself. In this manner, making a slave or friend in need kin would disregard the downright basic because of the demolishment of the childs free sound activity. In this manner, utilization of PGD for the production of guardian angel (slave) kin is unjustified in light of the fact that it emphatically disregards Kants second all out goal. Moreover, making of hero kin prompts different issues. Notwithstanding being untrustworthy, there is a solid conviction that a childs significant personality would be disabled. They would be seen as an optional addition, an instrument exclusively intended to spare another life. This hindered will of the kid would prompt innumerable mental issues. The psychological part of the childs altruistic nature would be undermined the kid would need confidence and self-rescpect-as he/she would not be lauded for his/her individual worth but instead as a way to a specific end. Guardians, by utilizing PGD for instrumentalization of their youngsters, would abuse the childs self-governing will and singular individual incentive by utilizing them as minor intends to parental closures and limit[ing] a childs right to an open future4. In total, PGD advances unjustified production of originator infants and friend in need kin. The utilization of this innovation permits guardians to utilize their youngsters (or potential kids) as a way to fulfill their parental end; accordingly, dismissing the childs independent will to be an end in himself/herself. Along these lines utilizing PGD to make originator children and rescuer kin is impermissible in light of the fact that it disregards Kants second downright objective. Resistance PGD is contended to be deceptive in this paper; notwithstanding, others see its utilization worthy and simply a real independent right of guardians to deliver solid youngsters. They accept that since guardians are the most socially and monetarily influenced by the introduction of a kid, at that point they ought to have the privilege and opportunity to pick the character of their posterity. Having a solid kid is in the guardians intrigue since it is less socially and monetarily obliging and difficult. In addition, being solid is to the greatest advantage of the youngster also. The kid would need to carry on with a glad and sound life, liberated from ailment. On the off chance that PGD can give an instrument to evacuating such deadly and slandering ailment structure society, at that point it ought to be impeccably conceivable to have the option to utilize it. Guardians reserve a privilege to pick what it best for their youngsters and family; along these lines, utilizing PGD as an impli es that will permit them to choose for characteristics they see best fit for their kid would be superbly advocated. Counter Be that as it may, while these are conceivable explanations behind the utilization of PGD, they are not sufficiently able to legitimize its shameless applications. Describe Zaha Hadid’s Style And Design Characteristics - 5775 Words

Describe Zaha Hadid’s Style And Design Characteristics (Term Paper Sample) Content: NameInstructorCourseDateZaha HadidIntroduction When exploring contemporary architecture, it is hard to overlook the work of the most outstanding female architect, Zaha Hadid. Hadids work featured radical ideas that were at first dismissed as impractical and seldom realized in concrete and steel. In fact, she was barely recognized in the early 1990s but the new millennium brought favors as she won various contracts to design iconic structures such as the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Phaeno Science Center and BMW building in Leipzig. Owing to her unique design for the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, she earned the Pritzker Prize became the first woman to ever attain the coveted architectural award (Jodidio 21). Hadid was known for being resilient and mentally tough, attributes that made her oppose conventional society and rise above the practical constraints that made it possible for her to achieve her dreams. She was distinguished for her innovative and unusual architectural designs that have forever changed the perspective of the architecture field (Zaha Hadid Architects 34).Zaha Hadid was a British-Iraqi architect who was born on October 31, 1950, in the Iraq capital of Baghdad and died at the age of sixty-five in Miami, Florida on March 31, 2016. She was born to a wealthy, Islamic upper-class family that leaned toward westernization. Hadids father, Muhammad Husayn Hadid, was a wealthy Iraqi politician who at one time served as a finance minister and was known for co-founding a liberal Iraqi political movement, the National Democratic Party. On the other hand, Hadids mother had taken a significant interest in the artistic world, and Zaha later confirmed that her drawing ability emanated from her mothers creative nature (Jodidio 12). During her early years, her parents took her to various architectural exhibitions, which played a significant role in her initial interest and passion for architecture. At six years of age, Hadid frequently went to architectural events in Baghdad that featured distinguished architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright (Zaha Hadid Architects 43). At one of her interviews with the Guardian magazine, Zaha Hadid pointed out that she realized she wanted to be an architect at the Frank Lloyd exhibition at the Opera House in Baghdad. Her parents were very supportive as they encouraged and motivated her to pursue architecture and even took her to visit places that inspired her dreams. In her teenage years, her family toured the Sumerian region of Iraq, a trip that she said had an enormous impact on the aspects of architecture that she incorporated in her work. Hadid noted that she was keen to observe the Sumerian ruins and she admired how the landscapes, its wildlife, sand, reefs, water, and buildings flowed together and came alive to create beautiful sceneries. She said that her work tried to discover and reinvent the forms of urban planning and architecture that she saw in the Sumerian ruins in a contemporary manner (Jodidio 4).Zaha Hadid traveled to Lebanon to pursue her studies in Mathematics at the American University of Beirut. She said that studying mathematics made her realize the similarities and relationship between the subject and architecture. After completing her degree studies, Hadid traveled to London in 1972 and enrolled in the Architectural Association School of Architecture where she pursued architecture. She briefly worked for Rem Koolhaas, who was a crucial figure in Hadids architectural life, and in 1980 she opened her office while she taught in various schools of architecture in London and other cities across the world (Jodidio 38). Zaha Hadids style and design characteristicsZaha Hadids professor, Koolhaas, described her as a planet on her orbit and pointed out that her designs were fixated to satisfy a broader picture, where she ignored small details that could be fixed quickly. Zenghelis, her former professor, said that they referred to her as the inventor of eighty-nine degrees her designs were rarely at ninety degrees or right angles. Zaha Hadid defiantly designed structures that did not conform to typical features of architecture but instead chose to delve into non-rectilinear shapes and sought her influence from fluid geometry and abstract ideas (Hadid and Schumacher 12). Some of the unique features in all Hadids designs were the unpredictability and a form of controlled chaos that came with the completed structure. Her designs incorporated fluid flow and a unique blend of curves, which left people amazed by their complex nature, the way they were built and how they were supported. Hadids radical designs were astonishing since the unusual and brazen architectural plans such as intertwined concrete limbs and overlapping walkways changed how an individual entered and moved within the buildings (Unwin 236). Zaha Hadid never described herself as a follower of any distinct design school or style, and her architectural method or style cannot be categorized. She once defined her style by explaining that she tried to design structures that moved away from possessing ninety-degrees or right angles. She continued by saying that she liked to use diagonals because they represented an idea that reformed space (Zaha Hadid Architects 14). Experts in the architectural field described her designs to match architectural deconstructivism, which is a postmodern architectural movement that moves away from constrictive principles of modernism that include terms such as purity of form and form follows functions. By looking at Hadids architectural designs, one can agree that the structures possess various elements of deconstructivism in that they have an absence of symmetry, and some structures surfaces have been manipulated to form non-rectilinear shapes that distort the aspects of architecture. A look at some of Zaha Hadids buildings such as London Aquatics Centre, Innovation Tower, and Port Authority Building sh ows the elements of architectural deconstructivism, where the buildings assume non- rectilinear shape and have a lot of curves. Hadid described such designs to have been inspired by fluid geometry. To emphasize on her unconventional architectural designs, Hadid said that she never dealt with traditional ideas that would result in cute, little buildings in rectangular shapes to typically save space. She said that her structures were like the landscape or the world, not defined by corners and insisted that they were completely practical although they were built using designs that revolved around different organizational patterns (Jodidio 45). Patrik Schumacher, Zaha Hadids architectural collaborator, described Hadids work to fit parametricism, which is a contemporary architecture style that depends on algorithms, computers, and programs to influence equation for design functions. Schumacher refers to buildings such as the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Phaeno Science Center when he talks about parametricism since the designs move away from conventionalism and are a result of fabrication technologies and advanced computation, thus creating incredibly complex and fluid compositions. Altogether, Zaha Hadid design could be said to have assumed concepts of fluidity. She integrated fluid and space of fragmented geometry and multiple perspective points to create a form of the chaotic fluidity of contemporary design. Hadid worked to ensure that space and form were turned into fluid spatial patterns (Hadid and Schumacher 187). As the rest of the paper investigates and describes Zaha Hadids work in Heydar Aliyev Center, London Aquatics Centre, Evelyn Grace Academy, and One Thousand Museum, additional revelations about her style and designs will emerge, therefore, clearly explaining her innovations. Heydar Aliyev Center, Baku Location and DetailsZaha Hadid Architects design was used in the construction of the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center, which is a building complex in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, a country located in Southwest Asia. It is a huge steel and concrete marvel that exhibits a fluid form emanating from the topography and forming a fold that rises seventy-four meters high and curves inwards and outward to cover over fifty-seven thousand meters square of space. The cultural center complex and its structures are built on a site that extends for more than one hundred and eleven thousand meters square. The building complex features a library, museum, concert hall, cafes, gallery spaces, restaurants, and a large conference hall that holds three auditoriums. Heydar Aliyev Center is a cultural center that was named to bestow honor upon the first secretary of Soviet Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, who later became the president of Azerbaijan Republic. The cultural center is located near Bakus city center and forms an integral part of a development zone that is supposed to lead the city in culturally (Bekiroglu 11).In 2007, Zaha Hadids firm was chosen to be the design architect for the Heydar Aliyev Center, after winning the bidding competition. The building complex was designed to serve as the countrys host for all the cultural programs. Zaha Hadid Architects, Hadids firm, needed to be creative since the proprietor wanted the structure to stand out and break the monotony of the surrounding buildings, which were constructed using the memorial soviet architecture that was dominant in Baku. The proprietor needed a magnificent structure that would express the refined sensitivity of Azeri culture and bring the Azerbaijan people toward a national identity. Construction commenced in 2007 with the primary contractor, DIA Holding, breaking ground and the cultural center was opened on May 10, 2012, by the Azerbaijan president (Bekiroglu 7)....

Kafka could not develop relationships nor become more intimate with people, illustrating his loneliness. Kafka’s upbringing and background provide clear insight into Kafka’s own insecurities. Additionally, Kafka’s relationships with his family members further demonstrate the devaluation and isolation present in his life. Concerning the novella, Straus writes, â€Å"the narration focuses on how Gregor invalidates his family, how his family invalidates and destroys Gregor.† (Nina Pelikan Straus) The story itself focuses on Gregor’s exile from his family by his family. Such exile reflects the invalidation of Kafka in his own and the destruction Kafka felt from his own family. Furthermore, Gregor’s father states that â€Å"if he could understand us, then maybe we could come to an agreement with him.† (Metamorphosis) Kafka’s own father was unable to come to terms with him and his experience is paralleled by Gregor and his

Affermative Action Essay Example For Students

Affermative Action Essay Considering the subject of affirmative action the following questions frequently are raised: Is there a clear understanding of affirmative action roles/goals? What are the pros/cons of these programs? What are the loop holes in the system? Does seniority play a role in affirmative action? Addressing these key questions may help us all in our daily routine, as administrators and/or potential administrator in the public/private sector. Affirmative action programs throughout the United States have long been a controversial issue particularly concerning employment practices (public/private) and university student and/or staff recruitment. Most public agencies have some type of instituted affirmative action program. According to Cheryl Perry-League, Director of Equal Opportunity of the Port of Oakland, every business operating on Port of Oakland owned land must have a standing affirmative action program on record and businesses bidding to do work for the Port of Oakland must have an acceptably diverse workforce. BACKGROUND To understand the role and/or goals of affirmative actions programs we should define what the broad definition of what affirmative action is and what caused its development. The phase affirmative action was used in a racial discrimination context. Executive Order No. 10,925 issued by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. The order indicated that federal contractors should take affirmative action to ensure job applicants and employees are treated without regard to their race, creed, or national origin. A person could define this statement as an order to imply equal access and nothing else. Subsequently, Executive Order 11246 issued by President Johnson in September 1965, mandated affirmative action goals for all federally funded programs and moved monitoring and enforcement of affirmative action programs out of the White House and into the Labor Department. Affirmative action refers to various efforts to deliberately take race, sex, and national origins into account to remedy past and current effects of discrimination. Its primary goal is to ensure that women and minorities are widely represented in all occupations and at all organizational levels (Tompkins, 1995, p.161). Another definition of affirmative action according to Barbara Bergmann is planning and acting to end the absence of certain kinds of people-those who belong to groups that have been subordinated or left out-from certain jobs and schools (1997 p.7). Tracing the history of affirmative action, laws against racial discrimination have proved inadequate for workplace integration because they often provide remedies only after the fact. Affirmative action requires proactive steps to provide equal opportunities in employment as well as access to education. Many affirmative action programs were born from Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VII references to affirmative action programs were brought about because of the history of discrimination in the United States, certain groups are viewed as disadvantage in the current marketplace. Thus affirmative action laws impose temporary requirements to correct underutilization of these groups (e.g. , goals and timetables for increasing the number of minorities and women in a facility) (Gutman, 1993, p.9). Prior to these laws and the Title VII law, the U.S workforce was primarily dominated by white males. Although, still somewhat white male dominated, quotas that were designed through affirmative action programs have helped achieve some representation of women and minorities in the current work force. Some remedies brought about through affirmative action programs include goal setting, quotas, and timetables. GOALS AND QUOTAS The term goal refers to specific outcomes which, when achieved, will result in equal employment opportunity and equitable representation (Hall Albrecht, 1979, p.47-78). Goals and hiring quotas vary somewhat in their function. Goals generally are long range plans that organizations use and there are no expected minimum or maximum limitations. Quotas by comparison, establishes a definite number of people who must be hired. A Company cannot by law, use quotas unless it has been ordered to do so by a court to remedy a past action (Hall Albrecht, 1979, p. 47-78). Deficiency correction is the primary target of goal setting through affirmative action. For an organization to be effective with goals, they must be realistic, attainable, and monitored by the human resource department. Affirmative action programs generally achieve their set goals through several common practices called outreach programs. First, there are special recruiting programs where women and minorities will most likely be found. These special outreach programs often target black universities and female dominated educational facilities. A second outreach program involves special advertising. Generally, this is also implemented in areas that are heavily populated by women and minorities similar to that of recruiting programs. Through outreach programs like the ones mentioned above, goals can be attained to achieve equity and representation without forgoing higher educated and skilled applicants. PROGRAM JUSTICATION These programs can be justified because discrimination is still apparent in the United States today. A 1990 study by the University of Chicagos National Opinion Research Center found that the majority of white Americans still believe blacks to be inferior. For example, 53% of non-black respondents said they thought blacks were less intelligent than whites, 62% said they thought blacks were less patriotic, 62% said they thought blacks were lazier, and 78% said they thought blacks preferred to live off welfare. The National Assessment of Educational Progress, a series of national standardize tests, evaluates students on their proficiency in reading, writing and science. They divide and compare these results to better understand the effectiveness of public schools. Their results suggest a large imbalance in the educational quality received by whites and other races. The most noticeable imbalance in the three fundamentals of learning was the most important, reading. When students cannot read well, they usually cannot succeed in other subject areas. With the background of affirmative action and its programs established we should evaluate some of the problems with affirmative action and if affirmative action programs work. Opponents against affirmative action programs often believe that the system currently in place is a misuse of the original intent of affirmative action. The programs as they apply now are detrimental to the operation of the job market, to white males, and to the groups it is supposed to benefit. Wuthering heights 2 Essay In a seniority system, the last hired is the first fired, whether the employee is more skilled and competent than an employee protected by seniority. (1999). Richard Lester, author of Manpower Planning, believes that seniority places less qualified employees ahead of employees who are often better educated, more skilled in computers. Arthur Whitehill Shin Ichi Takezawa in Work Ways, concluded the same thoughts Younger worker in some cases are more competent than older workers because of [them being} better education, greater adaptability and physical fitness. The public sector and much of the private sector have recognized seniority for quite sometime. We can find this system practiced by older teachers at various universities who are often protected by tenure. Professor Daniel Barber has even stated in candid conversion that when he was the department chair for the Master of Public Administration he took care of the tenured faculty first. Knowing this, why do Opponents of affirmative action, have appeared to be, judgmental of about so-called merit and preference, why isnt there the same concern about the biggest workplace exception to strict meritocracy ? Seniority? Seniority is yet another way to protect the good ?o boys networks. Found in many of the historically white male dominated professions, for example, Firefighters, police, school superintendents, and college professors. Coming from a public sector background (Disabled Army War Veteran, Bureau of Prisons office administrator, Department of Veterans Affairs administrator, and to many federal internships to count) I support the seniority system in those places where affirmative action is still in place. Workplace should reflect the diversity of the community it serves, seniority is a fair system of labor management relations. Seniority gives employees for the personnel problems and private preferences of an employer. However, seniority is a widely used exception to strict merit system only if the workplace is democratic and applied with affirmative action the workplace can become more inclusive. Where affirmative action is repealed, seniority loses some of its legitimacy. I argue that only loses some of its legitimacy because I personally was retained as an employee in a seniority situation. I was the last hired but I was not fired. In short, the scope of seniority and affirmative action are similar. The goal of seniority is job security and affirmative action is integration; both goals are good for America. The American labor movement has a major stake in seniority. The movement should embrace affirmative action because in good conscience it should not take advantage of one and not honor the other. Basically, benefiting for seniority practices but opposing affirmative action for others. If affirmative action is repealed, seniority should go as well. Labor unions and movements should concentrate on saving affirmative action. At a time when all progressive social policies are under attack, unity between women, labor, and people of color is imperative. Seniority and affirmative action should stand or fall together. CONCLUSION Ultimately, the controversy surrounding affirmative action programs today will continue into the future. Society as a whole does not appear to be ready to relinquish its negative perception of the hiring practices brought about by Title VII. However, the benefits brought about this act has greatly increased the opportunity for women and minorities in employment that may not have otherwise been available. These programs have offered hope to some if not all-socioeconomic groups that they will be afforded the opportunity of equal employment and/or representation in our society. Furthermore, human resource departments in the public sector will have to become more skilled in implementing positive affirmative action programs if we are to reap the full benefits from them. Finally, Affirmative action is not a cure-all. It will not eliminate racial discrimination, nor will it eliminate competition for scare resources. Affirmative action programs can only ensure that everyone has a fair chance at what is available. They cannot direct us to the social policies necessary so people do not have to compete for scarce resources in the first place. The larger question to ask is why are there not enough decent paying, challenging and safe jobs for everyone? Why are there not enough seats in the universities for everyone who wants an education? Expanding opportunity for people of color means expanding not only their access to existing jobs ; education, but also removing the obstacles that cause these resources to be limited. To what extent can Steinbecks The Pearl be classed as a parable Essay Example For Students

To what extent can Steinbecks The Pearl be classed as a parable Essay Published in 1947, Steinbecks novella, The Pearl, has attracted much literary attention. Many critics have referred to the work as a parable, but how far can this classification be justified? In order to answer this question, we must first establish what is meant by the term parable. A dictionary defines a parable as a short story which puts across a moral or religious truth. We know of parables from the Bible, where Jesus told these stories to teach his followers about Gods word. Typical features we would expect from a parable would be: a short narrative told in a simple style with little detailed description; a homely setting;nameless and undeveloped characters; and a moral or religious truth conveyed through symbolism, with everyday objects or events representing larger ideas or concepts. The basic plot of The Pearl is straightforward. Kino,a native Mexican fisherman, married with a child, sees his son stung by a scorpion, and a doctor demands money for treating him. Kino finds a large pearl, which he thinks will solve all his problems and save his son,but instead it leads to greed, disaster and violence. We will write a custom essay on To what extent can Steinbecks The Pearl be classed as a parable specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Finally the family throw the pearl back into the sea, but not before they have lost their precious son in a shooting. In many ways, The Pearl conforms to what we would expect of a parable. The story is short, although not as short as the parables in the Bible;the style is simple, with little complex vocabulary or sentence structure; the main setting is the homely,if poor, Mexican fishing village and many of the characters are nameless, eg the doctor, the priest, the pearl buyers, the trackers. Even the main characters are not described in much physical detail. All we know of Kinos appearance is, he was young and strong and his black hair hung over his brown forehead. Certainly, we can take a moral message from the tale; that the promise of wealth is a great corrupting influence in mens lives, and such is human nature that man will often sink to great depths to gain the thing he desires. Evidence that would also mark this story as a parable is that the author uses a great deal of symbolism. Kino can be seen as representing man and all men, giving his story universal significance. His wife, Juana, has a name which means woman, again suggesting that she is meant to represent all women. The child makes up the archetypal family, representing the next generation and hopes for the future. The major line of symbolism, however, centres round the pearl itself, which symbolises much more than material wealth. It becomes a crystal ball in which one can see ones dreams and nightmares; Kino looked into its surface and it was grey and ulcerous. Evil faces peered from it into his eyes, and he saw the light of burning. And in the surface of the pearl he saw Coyotito lying in the little cave with the top of his head shot away. The whole story, in keeping with a parable, could also be seen as putting across a religious truth. It could represent mans search for his soul, finding good and evil on the way, making a sacrifice, and finally coming to a greater understanding. Kino at the start of the book is isolated and protected. When the pearl comes into his world, he learns about loneliness, hate, greed, suspicion and evil. Like Adam, in the Fall in Genesis, Kino returns to his home at the end of the book , having gained knowledge, but changed forever,as he has sacrificed his son for this knowledge. The idea of this book being a religious parable also seems to be borne out by the journey through the desert to sell the pearl, which is like a pilgrimage, testing the character of the pilgrim, and seems to echo the Exodus of the Israelites seeking their promised land in the Bible. Was this story supposed to be a version of the parable of the pearl in the Bible, where a merchant sacrifices everything he holds dear for a pearl of great value, and his place in the Kingdom of Heaven? As we have seen, Steinbecks novella has many features we would expect of a parable, but does that mean we can say it is one completely? .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a , .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a .postImageUrl , .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a , .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a:hover , .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a:visited , .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a:active { border:0!important; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a:active , .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u657a2d7a5ba2e0949cd840d2b9a0906a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Brave New World Essay Gender EqualityLooking at further evidence, we find features of the text which do not conform to those we would expect of a parable. Although the style is simple, there is a great deal more description than we would expect from a parable, some of it very poetic in style, eg High in the grey stone mountains, under a frowning peak, a little spring bubbled out of a rupture in the stone. It was fed by shade-preserved snow in the summer, and now and then it died completely and bare rocks and dried algae were on its bottom. This description of a pool continues for a full page. The main characters, Kino and Juana are named and their personalities are much more developed than we would expect form a parable. This makes the story far more realistic as the characters seem like believable people with real feelings and emotions, Juanas face was hard and lined and leathery with fatigue and with the tightness with which she fought fatigue. And her wide eyes stared inwards on herself. The whole story can be read as entertainment, without having to look for a message or meaning. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that Steinbeck was trying to write it as a realistic piece, and not as a parable. In his book, Sea of Cortez 1941, he explains that he took the idea for his book from an old Californian/Mexican folk tale about an Indian boy who found a pearl. He liked the story, but said, it did not sound believable because it was so much like a parable, or a short story with a hidden moral lesson and the character of the young boy went contrary to human direction, that is, he was not realistic enough. In Kino and Juana, Steinbeck has given us much more realistic people. In his introduction to The Pearl, Steinbeck himself casts doubt on his book being a parable, saying If this story is a parable, perhaps everyone takes his own meaning from it, and reads his own life into it. Looking at all the evidence, my conclusion is that although Steinbecks The Pearl has many features of a parable, it goes much further than a parable in that it exists on so many levels . It can be seen as a realistic story of the economic and political repression experienced by native Mexicans at the hands of their wealthy conquerors and rulers. It can also be seen as a story showing how man and nature are intertwined. It can be read as an exciting adventure tale, or as a moral or religious lesson. In many ways, it is unfair to categorise this novella by putting a label on it. I prefer to see it, like Steinbeck himself, as a unique work of art that each reader can interpret in his or her own way.

Where and Whence

Where and Whence Where and Whence Where and Whence By Maeve Maddox A few years ago a TV special aired with the title The From Whence We Came Awards. I dont recall what the awards were for. I just remember reacting to the use of from with the word whence. Whence is not synonymous with where. Whence means from what place/source/origin. Examples: The wealthy man never forgot the poverty whence he came. A stranger appeared in our midst. We know not whence he came. Whence came these caterpillars? Clearly, the use of whence in modern English is extremely limited. If you choose to use it, remember that the from is built in. Where has the meaning at what place or in what place. Unnecessary prepositions also show up with where. One often hears Wheres he at? and Whered he go to? instead of the more grammatical Where is he? and Where did he go? The unnecessary to is not as frequent as the added at. Perhaps the contraction of where is into wheres accounts for the speakers need to add the unnecessary at for balance. Finance questions Speech or Presentation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Finance questions - Speech or Presentation Example Other considerations include the frequency of single drills, as well as the number of drill session per week. The session should begin by crosschecking the safety consideration. Players should be free and well rested. They should be free of injuries in the limbs and arms that require exercising (Mcardle, 2000). After successful safety considerations, the session should proceed with a warm up. Begin by combining dynamic and static warm to achieve all desirable results (Mcardle, 2000). Players should do begin by slight running, going around the court two times, making a few stretching and jogging and Plyometric jumps. Warm up serves two functions. First, it prepares muscles for the explosive plyometrics. Secondly, it is one of the first stages of acquainting with plyometrics, especially for the novice (Taylor & Beashel, 1996). This training entails dropping on grounds from an upper surface, followed by a jump-up. A drop-down during the eccentric phase offers the muscles the pre-stretch, as well as a vigorous upward drive during the contraction phase. The effectiveness of the exercise is only effective if the time that the feet touch the ground is short. The exercise loading is determined by the dropping height, which should be about 0.7 to 1.1 meters (Taylor & Beashel, 1997). Three sets of jumps should be performed, each with 10 repetitions. In bounding, oversized strides are employed for the running action while time is spent in the air. Bound that involve two legs minimize the endured impact. The intensity may be increased by hopping or even single-leg bounding. Upstairs’ bounding improves the horizontal of movement. Three sets bounding and hurdling should be performed, each with 10 repetitions. Hand claps and press ups, done in alterations, is one way in which the chest and the arms can be conditioned. Pre-stretch occurs as the hands swing back to the ground and as the chest sinks. This

The morality of abortion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The morality of abortion - Essay Example It has been a question pondered for decades, possibly even millennia. Some feel that it begins at conception, the moment the sperm fertilizes the egg, and others believe life begins only once the being is viable, or can live and breathe on its own, while others argue it is at birth, once it is its own entity. In today’s society this question has taken on a much more legal realm rather than a philosophical one. Due to its validity in the argument for the morality of abortion it has become one of the hottest topics of debate today. Arguments for both sides, pro life and pro choice, can be seen in most every media outlet; from late night TV, to Presidential debates. It seems everyone has a view on this issue and all seem to want to have their say. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the human race has strong ties to its origins so in answering the question of if humans were once fetuses; many feel the answer to when life begins will also be uncovered. After researching the quest ion of, was a human being ever a fetus and the moral issue of what the arguments are for both the anti-abortionist and those who are pro-choice, the question of the morality of abortion should become clear. ... In this he argues that we could never have been something that was not a person, such as a fetus. He then takes this idea step further in saying that since only persons are moral agents and as a result have rights, no abortion ever has nor ever will violate any rights since non-persons, in this case fetuses, do not have any. This debate, though it seems logical, can hold many horrendous implications. If, in society, we view only those who are capable of rational and moral activity, as persons and therefore the only ones to have rights, many others besides the fetus could be excluded. Take for instance a man in a comma. In the comma state the man does not have the ability of ration or moral activity; he is in a sense a vegetable, same as a fetus. So according to this theory if he was an inconvenience then the plug could be pulled and it would be okay to let him die because he is not essentially a person. A new born, according to this theory, could also be deemed incapable of rational and moral activity, so in essence it is yet to be essentially a person, so therefore has no rights and if one so choose could be done away with. Another example would be a mentally handicap person, in many severe cases, the mentally handicap are incapable of rational and moral activity, therefore are they not considered essentially persons with rights. It seems that saying that only those with rational and moral activity are essentially persons and therefore have rights is a dangerous road to travel. Olson, however, takes on the view that we are not all essentially persons, but that each of us is essentially a member of the species, Homo sapiens, in short, an animal, a biological kind. He says that the properties of personhood are acquired by humans at some stage in

The Scottsboro Trials Essay -- Racial Relations, Segregation

March 25, 1931, nine men hopped on to a freight train of no return (Uschan 10). Unjust, prejudice, and racist the Scottsboro Trials, were definitely not just another ordinary case. The Scottsboro Trials changed how America viewed segregation. The nine young men, who hopped onto that train that day, were innocent and harmless. The Scottsboro Trials revealed the unjust treatment that African Americans faced outside of the Harlem Renaissance and changed views on segregation. Boarding the train from Chattanooga to Memphis seems like an innocent thing to do (â€Å"UMKC† par. 2). For the Scottsboro boys, boarding that train was one of the worst things they could have done. Two dozen whites and black road the train that day, and within the first 2 hours a fist fight broke out between the two races. The blacks won the fight, and the white men were thrown off the train and ran to the station master and reported that they had been assaulted by a gang of blacks on the train. Alabama stopped the train and dozens of men showed up and surrounded the train with guns in their hands. They took the nine African Americans aboard the train and put them into the Scottsboro jail (UMKC par. 2-5). Two other people were on the train at that time too. Victoria Price and Ruby Bates were found on the train unexpectedly while the search men were looking for any more black citizens. The women identified themselves and then Ruby Bates told the search men â€Å"We’ve been raped. All those colored boys raped us.†(Uschan 14).This caused an uproar throughout America not because rape was a horrible crime, but because back then a white woman having sexual relations with a black man was considered one of the worst things a person could do. The act was considered so terr... ... thing of the past. Racism is a very harsh and dangerous thing to participate in. Being racist can cause a person’s life to be in danger and it can ruin their life too. Helping African Americans understand that these racist people are sick and will be punished is just one way we can help the fight against racism. And so, the Scottsboro Trials ended up being victorious. It changed how America felt about discrimination and segregation and opened up many opportunities for blacks. America has changed as a whole because of the Scottsboro Trials and racism is slowly fading away. Segregation has caused many hardships throughout history and finally, it ended partially because of the Scottsboro Trials. Soon, America will be a place where it is as if seclusion against African Americans never existed. African Americans are one of us and together we are America.

Dangers in the Environment Essay

The Dangers within the Environment are affecting our health to means that we wouldn’t believe. We destroy our planets ozone that affects and causes global warming. The pesticides, mercury and carbon dioxide that we release into the environment cause so many health problems to use and our children. It actually affects our children’s health more than it does to use. How can we do this to our environment knowing that it affects our health more and more. Dangers with in our Environment The dangers within the environment that affect our health are increasing day by day. The first thing that is we are doing to the environment is destroying our ozone layer. We are destroying the ozone layer by greenhouse gases. The way we treat our planet is going to affect our health and maybe even kill us because of the toxins and pollutants that we release into our environment. Certain types of pollutants that we release into the environment can cause us to have several complications with our health. The pesticides, mercury and carbon dioxide that we release into the environment cause so many health problems to use and our children. It is not hard to see what we are doing to our planet on a daily basis. There is so much research that shows how much even low level of air pollution affects our health. Carbon dioxide is what we breathe out of our lungs when exhaling. Carbon dioxide is released while we are driving our motor vehicles, using our lawn mowers, and etc. For the one gallon of gasoline that is used in our machines it causes 19. of carbon dioxide to distribute into our environment. Trees absorb the carbon dioxide from the air but if the tree is cut down, burned, or dies then the carbon dioxide will not be absorbed up. When a tree slowly rots then the carbon dioxide is slowly released back into the environment. The pesticides that are toxic to our health and our environment are chemical pesticides. The chemical pesticides that is more dangerous to be farmers, their family members, and other people who use the chemical pesticides. The pesticides are released into the air that we breathe in. The pesticides are left on the produce that they are sprayed on and then remain on the inside of the produce. The pesticides can be rinsed off, but they also can run off into springs, and large bodies of water. In which the pesticides can contaminate our water supply. In the world today everyone is at risk for simple reason that we are destroying our planet. Our world is at a total disaster at how we treat it and take care of it. Individuals that live in the world are at risk form pollutants and toxins that are in the environment that we breathe on a daily basis. The pesticides, mercury and carbon dioxide that we release into the environment cause so many health problems to use and our children. We need to take better care of our environment and worry about our health. People do not care about their health because if they did then they will not smoke cigarettes that affect their health and our environment. If we would save from driving all over the place in our vehicles when you could ride a bike or walk. It could help save our environment from pollutants being disbursed into the air that we breathe.
